Sixth graders started their $5,000 shopping spree in Microsoft Excel. Students were given this assignment:
Use your imagination and pretend that you entered a contest called “Bullseye” to win a $5000.00 shopping spree at Target. Imagine the surprised look on your face when you’re called to the phone and told that you WON!
HOLD UP! The surprised look on your face turns serious when you learn there are a couple of stipulations! You are informed that the total cost of all the items you select must not exceed (go over) $5000.00, tax included which is 6%. Also, the total cost of all the items (tax included) must fall between $4990.00 and $5000.00 or you lose everything. ONE MORE CATCH YOU HAVE TO PURCHASE 5 OR MORE ITEMS BUT NOT MORE THAN 28 ITEMS.
"Not a problem!" you exclaim. "I have a secret weapon called Excel! I can make it do the math for me - right down to the very last penny! Show me the money!" “Show me the money!"
Sixth graders began by setting up their spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel (formulas and all!). Once students finished setting their spreadsheet up, they were allowed to go to www.target.com to go on their shopping spree.
